The abundance of higher education institutions provides a plentiful supply of well educated, technically skilled workers. Colorado is home to four major research universities with the largest state university, the University of Colorado, located just nine miles from Interlocken. Other schools located within an hour from Interlocken include: Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado School of Mines in Golden, the University of Denver, Metropolitan State College, the University of Northern Colorado and Front Range Community College.

Colorado also claims one of the largest groups of public college and university employees in the U.S., exceeding the national average by 66 percent.

Colorado's biggest university system is the University of Colorado, which includes campuses located in Boulder, Denver and Colorado Springs, and features the University Health Sciences Center campus in Denver - the only academic health center in the state and region.
